A PABULUM CAFE FOR WYMONDHAM PROVIDING A SERVICE FOR THOSE WITH ALZHEIMERS DISEASE AND OTHER KINDS OF DEMENTIA
Age Concern Norfolk and members of Fairland United Reformed Church in Wymondham are working in partnership to establish a Pabulum Cafe in Wymondham at the Fairland Church Centre.
Pabulum Cafes which began a few years ago in the Netherlands have recently been opened in Norwich and Diss by Age Concern Norfolk and have become instantly successful.
A Pabulum Cafe provides a meeting place in a relaxed social atmosphere, with dementia sufferers, their carers and volunteers sitting around small tables with tea, coffee and typical cafe refreshments. In such a setting carers receive guidance from each other alongside advocacy, support and assistance from visiting professionals such as G.P.s – Nurses – Social Workers and Mental Health specialists. A high ratio of trained volunteers, supported by a paid Co-ordinator enables carers to use the time at the cafe to have a break from their caring duties and obtain specific advice, information and wide ranging support in adjacent areas to the cafe. A variety of stimulating social activities are also provided for those with dementia, based upon talks, discussions and life story activities using reminiscence therapy techniques.
An open information day will be held at Fairland Church Centre on Friday, November 21st, 2008, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Pabulum Cafe style for all those interested including those affected by dementia, their families, carers and professionals as well as members of the public who might wish to support the project or become a volunteer. If sufficient support for the proposal is realised we will form a representative local steering group in partnership with Age Concern Norfolk to raise funds and oversee the establishment of a Pabulum Cafe in Wymondham.
NB “Pabulum” means food & nourishment.
If you are interested in supporting this proposal please contact Trevor Brown on 01953 851796 or e-mail: trevor-brown@fairlandurc.org.uk.
